TOP 100 QUEST: THE FISH HOUSE, Burleigh Heads, QLD

Pan seared scallops with spring onion

Well, what a treat this was – this was my first trip to the Gold Coast and I was lucky that my lovely friends picked me up at Brisbane airport and drove me down the scenic route to Burleigh Heads. When we pulled up outside The Fish House, I must say, it didn’t look anything too impressive, and the inside is pretty casual too with simple wooden tables and chairs. However we were seated at a great table right at the open windows – the sun was shining and we had a great view of the beach just across the road.

It was warm so we opted for a nice cold buttery 2007 ‘Beginning’ chardonnay from The Lane Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills.

On first look at the menu I wanted to order pretty much everything on it.  Not being able to choose, we decided to do the sharing thing.  First up, the Raw Scampi with Citrus and Coriander.  Presented with the head put back in place, it looked like the poor thing was trying to crawl off the plate!  So fresh and full of flavour with a nice kick to it.  It was delicious!

Next up, the Char Grilled SA Octopus – nice, and simply done with a cheek of lemon.  The scallops with spring onion were gorgeous! Big plump beauties, seared perfectly.

And then, the dish I was most excited about – Thin Spaghetti with Sea Urchin, Garlic, Olive Oil and Parsley.  Another nice simple dish, but oh so delicious! I could easily have ordered another plate of it.

Our final dish was the Bar Cod steamed with ginger and shallots.  Beautifully delicate and so so fresh. This came out with the sides of greens, crispy roasted potatoes and cos lettuce.

This truly was a delicious meal.  I would gladly eat all of those dishes again.  If you’re ever in the area, or if you feel like a drive – the sun, the surf, the food and wine… it’s a must do!
